PhD Program Infection Biology

PhD Program “Infection Biology” Center for Infection Biology Infections by pathogens cause approximately one third of all human fatalities worldwide.  An ongoing emergence of new pathogens such as HIV, SARS and the avian influenza strain H5N1, and the recurrence of diseases previously believed to be extinct such as tuberculosis and diphtheria meet an alarming scenario of declining rates in vaccinations as well as an increasing resistance of germs to antibiotics.  Despite considerable advances in medicine, this situation calls for extensive research and new approaches to the prevention and therapy of infectious diseases.

The applicant should have a PhD/dr. scient or equivalent education in marine biology, and preferably with background in marine sediment ecology, with a sound knowledge of ecological theory and a strong capability in statistical analyses. A large spatially-referenced database on marine sediment assemblages is available. Familiarity with climate-related research and databases is advantageous. The University of Oslo has excellent facilities for field and laboratory work including access to a mesocosm for experimental research. The successful candidate will work in an active group of researchers in marine ecology and in addition the University has a number of highly active climate research groups

Young Investigators Program

European Commission 6th Framework Program

30 European Scientists have established EURASNET, the European alternative splicing network. EURASNET is a Network of Excellence consortium within the 6th Framework Program (FP6), and integrates European research on alternative splicing. To promote new groups working on alternative splicing, EURASNET will include five Young Investigator Teams. They will have full access to NOE activities and a three-year research grant totaling 120,000 € .

Editorial Manager Position

FEBS is seeking an Editorial Manager for the new journal Molecular Oncology.

This position is based at the offices of the Danish Cancer Society in Copenhagen, and available with immediate effect.

In this new position, the Editorial Manager will have overall responsibility for providing assistance and support to the Editor-in-Chief and the scientific editors of the journal in determining the scientific content, quality, editorial direction and production values of the publication and establishing a leading market position for the journal, while adhering to standards, schedules, and budgets. The job includes hiring, training, managing, and mentoring editorial staff. The launch of the first issue is scheduled for the second half 2006, published by Elsevier.

The appointee will work with the scientific team to foster professional relationships and development of a strong ethos for the journal. (S)he will set the priority framework for efficient manuscript processing and delivery of high quality research papers into each publication of the journal. (S)he will be expected to maintain contacts within the scientific community and be able to commission high quality papers and reviews that enhance the reputation of the journal.

Imperial College London Group Leader Position

Three Group Leader Positions Neuroscience (Clinical or Non-Clinical) We are seeking scientists working on fundamental aspects of molecular neurobiology and are particularly interested in in vivo models for neuro-behaviour and neurological disease. These career-track positions will enable outstanding individuals, to establish their own independent research teams. They will be based in the Clinical Sciences Centre, a core-funded MRC research institute at the Hammersmith Hospital campus of Imperial College London. World-class facilities available at the CSC include transgenics, cell sorting, microarrays, genetics/genomics, microscopy and animal and clinical imaging (MRI and PET). A generous start-up package of up to two support posts and appropriate running costs is available for successful applicants. An appropriate academic appointment at Imperial College and an honorary clinical contract (up to and including consultant level) with Hammersmith Hospitals NHS Trust will also be available.
